Air Traffic Control

The Air Traffic Control (ATC) system is still in dire need of a long overdue overhaul. Re-open The FAA Academy in Oklahoma City for all new ATC hires. Send them to school with a policy and goal of sending into the field only the best potential candidates. Since the FAA closed the FAA Academy the weeding out process has been shifted to "Field Facilities" working with "live" air traffic. Am I the only one that sees... more »

Commercial Vehicles saf.ety on a standard Class C test

Along with what is required to be a standard driver for a motorvehicle, the written test should have two or three basic questions regarding their awareness around big rigs and how a driver should escpecially practice safety around them.
for example the stopping requirement as a general example to explain the larger distance for trucks at the same speed as cars so the trucks may be less likely to be cut off. or the proper... more »

Open up Amtrak data

Require that Amtrak provide its data in an open format. Amtrak should provide and maintain schedule data using the GTFS (general transit feed specification) format http://code.google.com/transit/spec/transit_feed_specification.html

Also consider providing other non schedule data in open formats or encourage the development of APIs in conjunction with Amtrak web services.

FAA Performance Management System

The DOT needs to evaluate the FAA's use of its Performance Management System which basically removed the FAA from most of Title V regulation. I would like to see shared on the Open Government Website for DOT the performance metrics based on that transition. The initial transition to its own PMS system ocurred in 1996: On November 15, 1995, Congress enacted Section 347 of the 1996 Department of Transportation (“DOT”)... more »

Old Government - New ITS

The “Human Factor” in the U.S. Transportation Management Center. Project Management – Operations – The Traveler

It’s a balance between technology and psychology at all levels. All areas throughout the world with the respected need for TMCs have standardized practices that are universal. But, are there any studies and developments to compare the differences? I have yet to see the acknowledgement that all TMC are different... more »

Open data for Safety & Innovation in Cars

Here is link to my OpEd published today in NYTimes http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/12/opinion/12chase.html?ref=opinion

If we required carmakers to make much more sensor data read-only and accessible through the Onboard Diagnostic unit, innovators could develop all sorts of powerful tools. Car owners could opt in to give anonymized data to manufacturers who could spot weird car behavior early.

Project applications & studies

I don't know whether this is a significant problem for others, but during a very research-intensive internship I did over the summer, I had a lot of difficulty finding different studies/applications for projects. While all the information was accessible, it wasn't organized. I'd find it very helpful (and I'm sure others would too) if an organizational system allowing simple and quick access to project applications and... more »
